Nissan Pairs With Beijing on System to Avoid Jams

Tokyo-based Nissan approached Beijing city officials last year with a new technology dubbed "Star Wings" to reduce traffic congestion during the 2008 Olympic Games. Using an existing Beijing system for collecting traffic data, the Nissan technology will transmit real-time information to drivers via a wireless network to monitors in cars, so they'll know the quickest route to take and which streets to avoid. Nissan's goal is to put its technology into a fifth of Beijing's 3 million cars by that time.

Comment: Dynamic traffic information service has attracted public attention from automakers. To get more market share in the competitive auto market, automakers plan to promote telematics services one after another to improve brand images. Dynamic traffic information service is one of the services most expected by users. At present, Beijing, Shanghai and other major cities are developing dynamic traffic information demo projects. But the integration of information sources and unification of distribution channels are still the bottlenecks in promoting nationwide traffic information services. Furthermore, the national traffic information service standard to be issued is a great concern. It is sure that China will put forth its own standard by using TMC for reference.
