China's 1st homemade navigation chip unveiled

Shanghai yesterday launched its own core chip “Navigation 1” for China's homemade Compass (Bei Dou) satellite navigation system. Navigation 1 will substitute all foreign chips in the Compass system, making it a system really “created in China”. The Beidou system, mainly used for economic purposes, has played a significant role in cartography, telecommunications, water conservation, transportation, fishery, prospecting, forest fire monitoring and national security. It is reported that Navigation 1 is independently developed by Shanghai Fukong Hualong Technology Co, and is better than its foreign counterparts in performance and manufacturing cost.

Comment: The development of the Compass (Bei Dou) navigation & positioning system plays an important role in breaking the GPS monopoly in the satellite navigation application market, according to insiders—and of political and national defense significance, the Compass system can also be widely used in sea, air, land transportation, wired communication, and wireless communication. As China’s first core chip for the Compass system, Navigation 1 is significant for turning the Compass system from “made in China” to “created in China”.
