| SBD: “there is still a strong market for embedded navigation systems” |
| |
The European navigation market is clearly growing at a healthy pace, with all three major segments (OE, PND and smart phones) expected to co-exist over the next 5 years, notices SBD today. Though challenged by PNDs and smart phones, European in-vehicle navigation market still has great development potentials. Experience of using PNDs has given many drivers a taste of navigation and they are now upgrading to embedded systems with their superior in-vehicle integration. Some automakers, such as Fiat and Kia, have launched a series of low-end embedded navigation systems. The in-vehicle navigation systems are forecast to be sold at the retail price of €400 by 2012.
Comment: PNDs and GPS-enabled mobile phones bring challenges to in-vehicle navigation, but in-vehicle navigation will not exit the market. In the future connected era, telematics integrated with navigation, communication, information, entertainment, safety & security, and remote car diagnostics will be more and more of consumer attraction. To meet drivers’ experiences and requirements, automakers can fit multifunctional navigation systems for high-end vehicles; on the other hand, they can fit cars with low-cost and low-price navigation systems.
