| Telematics Services at Starting Stage |
| |
First launched by automakers in 2002, telematics services have been developing for almost six years. Communication modules for vehicles have been used in a limited range because of low communication speed. Despite this, telematics services also have new development trends. From 2009 to 2010, large-capacity communication service “Mobile WiMAX” oriented to vehicles and mobile terminals is likely to reach the level of practical use, communicating at several Mbps to scores of Mbps like wireless LAN and ADSL. Any vehicle supporting WiMAX can exchange large-capacity image contents with other vehicles and road infrastructure like servers. When the large-capacity permanent connection environment oriented to vehicles gets perfect, the era of “vehicle life taking on an entirely new look” may be coming.
Comment: Time is needed to develop from standalone vehicles to interconnected vehicles. However, the telematics market is undoubtedly developing fast around the world in these years. Its development is promoted by the growth of vehicle ownership, continuous changes of auto electronic technology, and rapid development of wireless communication technology. Security and information interconnectivity are getting more and more important for a good car.
