Intelligent Car Technology Take-up Too Slow, Says Transport Committee

Take-up of intelligent car technologies remains very low, given their potential, says the Transport Committee in a report adopted on Tuesday. These technologies need to get cheaper, but also to be better publicized, it stresses, noting that if fully deployed, with the necessary infrastructure, EU-wide emergency call technology could save up to 2,500 lives a year on EU roads, and electronic stability control up to 4,000. The report calls on the 14 Member States that have yet to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the system's introduction to do so by mid-2008.

Comment: The development of eCall which bears the responsibility of saving lives is full of twists and turns. The change of the market’s attitude to eCall ― from initial enthusiastic participation, to later retreat one after another, and to current great care ― reflects the severe completion about eCall in the pan-European market. While the competition is at a stand, government’s involvement may become key force to promote the industry development.
