Clear, highly accurate, and information-rich maps of disaster areas powerfully relive people’s tension and provide scientific decision support for earthquake relief. “To meet demands of different departments, we have made various thematic maps, such as sketch maps of quake affected areas, chorography and traffic maps of disaster areas, emergency relief progress maps, and quake lake distribution maps. Maps show great flexibility in the quake relief,” says Mr. Yanying Xu, Director General of Department of National Land Survey, State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, who has just returned to Beijing from the quake relief front line. Comment: With the rapid development of real-time map update technology and mapping technology, remote sensing image data like aerial photograph and satellite photograph can be quickly transferred to various thematic maps for the earthquake relief. Maps are used at all links of the quake relief, including news broadcast, present situation investigation of disaster areas, disaster relief schemes, quake relief command and dispatch, and post-disaster reconstruction. It’s the responsibility, obligation, and pride for the whole map industry to make a contribution to the earthquake relief.
