| Apple Unveils 3G iPhone – with GPS |
| |
Apple today introduced its new iPhone with 3G networking that is as fast as Wi-Fi. 3G network support is the key for Apple to improve its market share in Asia and Europe. The new iPhone has enhanced email functions in order to attract enterprise users. It also has built-in GPS chip for expanded location based mobile services. The price of the new iPhone has stunningly decreased. The 8GB model is only priced at $199 (1,300 RMB). From July 11, 2008, iPhone 3G will be available in 22 countries or regions, excluding China mainland.
Comment: On the very same day of iPhone 3G release, Samsung introduced i900 smartphone. Nokia has also announced to release N96 model handsets in the third quarter. All this indicates the smartphone market is rapidly developing with intensifying competition. 32.2 million smartphones, most of which have built-in GPS, were sold in the world in Q1, up 29% year on year. In 2008, GPS function will be the key development trend for mobile phones, which may arouse higher user interest in navigation than PND does.
