TomTom Q2: PND Volume up 70%, ASP down 33%

TomTom today announced a “reported” revenue for the Group (TomTom and Tele Atlas from June 1) of €453 million for the second quarter. TomTom shipped 3,066 million PND units in the quarter, an increase of 54% sequentially and an increase of 70% year on year. The average selling price for PNDs in the second quarter was €131, an increase of 12% compared to the previous quarter. But compared to the same quarter last year the ASP decreased by 33%. Tele Atlas’ revenue in the quarter was €72 million, slightly decreased from €73 million of Q2 2007, and its map licenses sales (PND and in-dash navigation) have only grown 20% in units this quarter against the same quarter last year.

Comment: Tele Atlas was officially merged to TomTom in June. Though the navigation industry is booming, Tele Atlas’ Q2 revenue slightly decreased compared to the same period in 2007, Its PND revenue – representing 58% of its overall revenue - increased only 8% while its automotive and data revenue decreased 18%. For one thing, Tele Atlas’ largest two customers TomTom and Mio seemed to have lost market share over competitions; for another, with the largest growth of the PND market now concentrating in the United States, and Navteq retaining the biggest share of this market (over 70%). From TomTom Q2 report we can see, the global PND market is boosting, but whether the convergence of TomTom and Tele Atlas can turn it into profit may need to be tried by time.
